How To Clean And Paint Your Powder Coated Aluminum Fence

Powder coated aluminum fencing adds an attractive look to your yard with very minimal maintenance. There are, however, times when you need to paint over your fence to improve its appearance. Here are some tips to help you through this process of preparing and painting to give your aluminum fence a new look.

Decide to Paint Your Fence

When you have an aluminum fence installed on your home's property, the aluminum material has been coated with a special treatment that can last for many years without showing signs of wear. During a powder coating treatment, your aluminum fence is coated in electrically charged powder particles and is then heated in an oven to seal the coating to the exterior of the aluminum, creating a shiny, glazed, durable finish. It can remain strong under stress from abrasion, heat, weather, corrosion, and force from an object.

You may decide to paint over your fence's finish for many different reasons. For example, you may want to change the fence's color, refresh an old paint job, or reapply a worn powder coating. Fortunately, this painting process can be completed with the right preparation.

Clean and Prepare the Fence

The first step in preparing the surface of your fence for painting is to remove any residues, including bird droppings and dirt. Washing your aluminum fence is a simple process, as you only need a bucket of warm water and several squirts of liquid dish soap. Use a sponge or a rag to wash and remove any residues and dirt build-up from the exterior of the fence, being sure to clean inside any ornamental features.

Rinse off your fence with a power washer or your garden hose with a nozzle sprayer attachment. Make sure the water has dried completely from the fence before proceeding to the painting step.

Prepare the fence for a primer and paint application by scratching up its shiny surface. Use some steel wool or a sanding block, and rub the exterior of the fence to create scratches, which will help the primer adhere better to the powder coated aluminum.

Apply Primer and Paint

Select a primer that can be used on aluminum surfaces, which you can find at most home improvement stores. Also choose a paint that can be applied onto metal in the color of your choice. Apply the primer onto the aluminum fence, using a paint sprayer, brush, or roller. Allow the primer to dry for several hours, then follow with one to two coats of your selected paint. Be sure to allow the paint to dry thoroughly between coats.
